Roughing end mills are designed to quickly remove large amounts of material. These kind of end mills utilize a wavy tooth form cut on the periphery. This shape forms many successive cutting edges producing many small chips. During cutting, multiple teeth are in contact with the workpiece reducing chatter and vibration. Generally roughing end mills are followed by a finishing end mill due to the fact that they leave a rough surface finish. Roughing end mills are sometimes called hoggers or hogging.
